Welcome Back!

I hope you all had a nice February vacation! I was at home with something. Not sure what but it involved a continuous throbbing headache that lasted the ENTIRE week that no medicine could touch! :(  I think I am finally on the mend. I just wanted to let you know that I told the children that due to the chaos of the week before last, we will just take our regular gumball quiz on Friday for the facts that they were practicing before the storm. I know it's been awhile but this will give them more of a chance to practice.

We will spend this week getting back into the routine, learning new sight words and word sorts, being introduced to nonfiction book clubs (exciting!), working on our All About Books in Writing Workshop, and learning about fact power in Math. We will spend some time on Friday doing Dr. Seuss activities in honor of his birthday on Saturday. If your child has any Dr. Seuss books at home that they could send in for this day, that would be great! Please make sure your child's name is on the book. It will be returned Friday afternoon.

Now for a long awaited challenge!
Please ask your child the following questions if they wish to participate. Email me their answers. 2/3 correct earns a little prize! (Student answers only please!)
1. What was the name of the war that George Washington was a general in?
2.  Abraham Lincoln was the ________ president. (number)
3.  Abraham Lincoln was born in a _________________.

Thank you!

The 100th Day!

Here are some fantastic pictures of the students that turned "100" for our 100th day of school! They looked so cute!

Valentine's Day

We had a fun and SHORT Valentine's Day! With the delay I didn't get to everything I wanted to but we managed to squeeze in the important things. I cut out and wrote the names on the milk jugs and the students had a great time decorating them with lots of stickers. After lunch they had a chance to pass out their valentines by dropping them into the jugs. :)  We had our Valentine's Day workshops (Thank you to Mrs. Bates, Mrs. Riley and Mrs. Keep for the help!) and the students had a great time.

100th Day Dress Up!!!

Hi Everyone!
I was NOT in school today, my son has strep. If it isn't one thing, it's another. Due to the snow days, our 100th day is Friday and I am so excited to see how the students come in! Please don't stress too much! Find things around the house, maybe from family or neighbors! I am so excited and can't wait for plenty of pictures of all of the kids dressed as though they are 100. :)

UPDATE!

Well as of NOW (Monday and just finding out no school tomorrow), our 100th day is not until Friday. This is good because I didn't want it to conflict with Valentine's Day. Hopefully we are in there for Thursday and can proceed with our Valentine workshops and passing out of valentines. PLEASE send in clean empty  milk jugs whether we are in school Wednesday or Thursday. I only have them from about half the class. If you have extra (maybe you had to dump some milk like I did!), please send them in. I would really appreciate it. I hope you are all getting your power back. I got mine back last night.  Stay warm and safe!

100th Day Update!

Hi Everyone!
Our 100th day is now on Wednesday the 13th (tentatively, unless we miss any more days). Therefore we will schedule our "Dress like you are 100" for the 13th as well. I can't wait to see the students! I will be sure to get plenty of pictures. I will be dressing up as well! As always, email me if you have any questions. Thank you and stay warm and safe this blizzard! Here is the graph of our predictions in inches for today's snow!

Literacy Night!

Did you know Big Ryan will be coming on Thursday night to entertain the students with some tall tales while the adults get a peek into how literacy takes place in our classrooms? I hope you can make it! Anyone of my students that come will get a no homework pass for that night's Math homework! Students can also see me on Friday morning for a pencil. Thanks and hope you can attend! (Don't worry if you haven't sent in your form yet, it's not too late!)

Penguings, Groundhog Day and Some Information!

We had a blast this week learning about penguins! We tied our nonfiction unit in Reader's and Writer's Workshop right into the penguin unit. We learned how we may come to tricky words in nonfiction but we can use strategies to tackle those tricky words. I modeled with many penguin books and we tackled big words such as hemisphere and regurgitation! We started out the week by writing down any schema we had about penguins. We will add our new learning to the chart on Monday! In Writer's Workshop we worked on an All About Book - All About Penguins. We learned about what all about books often have and we put some of those into our own books. They came out great. Next week the students will begin to think of topics for their own all about books. In Math we got to practice measuring with tape measures and also measured out heights for various penguins. The students are working in small groups to draw and color the penguins to look realistic. Hopefully we will be done this upcoming week and I can post some pictures!

We also read a nonfiction book about Groundhog day. Then we predicted whether Punxatawney Phil would see his shadow yesterday.

A reminder to please bring in cleaned out gallon milk jugs (labels off) for our Valentine's Day cards! I will also send a paper notice home but if you have extra that would be fantastic. You can start to send some in now! I also plan to have Valentine's Day craft workshops again so anyone that is available that day and would like to come, I would be so appreciative!

Please remember to write a letter or at least a short note back to your child in their parent notebook. It isn't just to sign your name that you have read it, but instead to write a short letter back that they can read.

Don't forget about our 100th Day dress up activity! Dressing up as if they are 100 years old is for our actual 100th day (the 12th). I know our school is having a celebration but that is on the 8th.

We also have Literacy Night for the parents/kids on the 7th! Just a reminder if you haven't passed in your form yet.
