Spiders and Owls!

The past weeks we have been doing a lot of learning about animals by reading several nonfiction books, charting our schema (our background knowledge) and our new learning, doing some shared writing pieces, writing fact books, learning about fact and opinion, and of course some cute simple crafts.

A Few Things...

Thank you to those of you that have offered to run a craft workshop on Halloween! This is one last plea for one more parent volunteer that is able to contribute his/her time. Please email me if you are interested! This will be 10:00-11:00 am on Halloween.

Sight Word Notebooks: Please remember to have your child send it back on FRIDAY. I will allow it to come back Monday as well but after two days, it gets very confusing and then difficult for me to get the new words together and checked from previous week. (The same goes for the reading homework. This should be returned Thursday, but Friday at the latest. If it doesn't come back until the following week your child will miss new books and reading homework for that week and I will hold on to it until the following Friday when I send them home again.)

Please have your child write in his or her neatest handwriting in the sight word notebooks. Please also help your child to remember capital letters and punctuation at the end of sentences. Sentences should be your child's best effort and not rushed through. It helps to use two lines as one since the lines are so thin, as well as skipping a line if using more than one. Your child also needs to write the word next to the one that they trace. Please use pencil. Encourage your child to write sentences that are not so "simple". For example, rather than "I go back.", ask your child to tell more in the sentence. Words that are unfamiliar to the child do not need to be spelled correctly but should show that effort was put into stretching out each sound.

Please send your child with some kind of jacket at this point moving forward. We will have outdoor recess unless it rains (or temperatures drop significantly). It is cool down by the water on the playground.

Thank you for your support!

Bats and Math

Last week we spent some time learning all about bats. The students ended the week by writing their own informational piece about bats. In Math we have been working on combinations to ten and being able to look for patterns to help organize our combinations to make sure we have found all the ways to ten. We also practiced by finding all the combinations for five. Here are a few pictures. :)

Fire Safety Week

Last week was fire safety week and we were so lucky to have Connor's dad, Mr. Bell, come in to speak to our class along with our third grade big friends. The students got to see and feel his gear and equipment and listen to many safety tips. They had a chance to ask many questions as well. Thank you so much to Mr. Bell for taking the time to come visit our classroom!
